Russia can cause damage in Ukraine. Russia can knock down buildings and blow up bridges but that isn’t the Tweety bird shirt and I will buy this goal. Putin wants to put a pro-Russian regime in place. That clearly isn’t going to happen. All 45 million Ukrainian citizens are standing in unison against Russia and the international community is rallying behind them. Putin isn’t going to be able to occupy the entirety of Ukraine long-term and any puppet regime will be overthrown. What good is a pile of rubble? What money does Russia have to rebuild after destroying everything? This would also ensure that he would also be fighting Ukrainians forever. Russia could “take” Ukraine at any time if they really wanted to.. The problem is keeping it as well as the cost. Scorched earth tactics work, but unless they’re willing to go far as ethnic cleansing on the local population (which would result in worldwide condemnation as well as potentially WW3 given how Ukraine’s population resembles Europe’s) they would result in generations of Russian hatred.

If Putin starts indiscriminately bombing Ukraine the Tweety bird shirt and I will buy this West will move to shut that down very quickly. Putin has put in as much as he can without risking all out war, and is failing. That would be a declaration of war. There may be further escalation if Russia started destroying everything but I really doubt that would be the specific response. It probably wouldn’t be over the whole country but If Russia escalates I could see NATO escalating as well. In any regard there would have to be some increased response. It’s been talked about before too. In 2016 Clinton wanted to enforce an No-Fly-Zone over Syria which would be to stop Russian planes from bombing the country. We really should not be edging escalation like that against a nuclear power. Nato can supply money and weapons, but actual military action from the alliance is going to be considered an act of war and I don’t trust Putin to not try to end the world if he starts seeing the walls start to close in around him like that. More sanctions, military actions, disinformation. There’s a lot of levers we can pull, I’m asking which one your thinking the West would pull . More likely than not, simply more of what we’re currently pushing: supplies, sanctions, disinformation, and cyber warfare. We’ll ride the Cripple-Daddy-Putin-Train until the Federation starts to collapse on itself or until they decide to cut their losses and scram. Unless the Russian military begins indiscriminately burning it all to hell and back with public brutality (the key being widely disseminated, public brutality), or he decides to say ‘fuck it’ and acts against anyone else, a change from the current status-quo (i.e. direction intervention) is unlikely.
