Vogue: You work full-time for a nonprofit organization, Living Cities. Tell me a little about the Southern 1880 University Jaguars HBCU T-Shirt it is in the first place but work you do and how it overlaps with your writing work. Nadia Owusu: I don’t see my writing life and my policy work as totally separate. When I think about cities, I’m asking who a place serves and why, and how those things came to be. What allows people to feel a sense of security and belonging where they live? Those are questions I’m asking in my writing life as well. In some ways, the writing is a way to process and imagine different possibilities. The work I’m doing now has to do with what ideologies are baked into current systems and what we need to do to undo them [and] make them more fair and inclusive. Those are questions I’m thinking about with myself: What are the narratives I believe in, and how can I open up my thinking to understand who I am in comparison with the folks around me?
