Comparing Covid19 to HIV is a strawman argument. For the ‘ and by the same token and most part, one had to ACTIVELY engage in certain behaviors in order to contract HIV/AIDS. Unlike this virus which is spread through the air via water vapor/respiration, HIV can only be contracted through direct contact of bodily fluids; semen, saliva, blood, etc. These unmasked, unvaccinated assholes are endangering everyone. I’ve got no more sympathy for them and I’m getting really tired of the finger wagging at this sub. I’m not popping champagne corks and celebrating awardees demise but I’m not crying either. Just the same as I wasn’t really sad when a close relative died of complications after lung surgery. He didn’t quit smoking after having HALF A LUNG removed. Not sad, I knew it was coming.

I read your op-ed commenting, in part, on the ‘ and by the same token and HermanCainAward subreddit. Here are a few points I would like to make. All deaths related to COVID-19 are tragic. Far too many lives have been cut short by this virus over the past two long years. The subreddit in question does not celebrate deaths because one was unvaccinated. There are many individuals for whom a vaccine isn’t even an option due to a preexisting health condition. These deaths are most obviously not celebrated in the slightest. The main theme of the subreddit is that it comments on the deaths of those who, for nearly a year since it became available, have not just avoided a vaccine, but were usually the same people who did not wear masks and contributed to the spread of the virus during the first year of the pandemic. Posts in the subreddit are related to people who have disseminated hateful conspiratorial theories related to the virus, railed agains politicians and medical experts trying to quell the pandemic, and ridiculed fellow citizens who have tried to prevent the spread of the virus by wearing masks or getting vaccinated.
